WAY back in 1796, good 'ole Moses Cleaveland and his traveling party of surveyors and explorers set out on behalf of the Connecticut Land Company to explore their newly purchased three million acres of land fondly known as "The Western Reserve".  As the survey party, headed by General Cleaveland came upon the muddy swampy land where the Cuyahoga met Lake Erie, Cleaveland said, "By Golly! This looks like a FANTASTIC place to locate an awesome city that will be the Capital of this Western Reserve!"  It took some time to gain some traction though, not incorporating until 1814.  Eventually, the city dropped the "a" and the rest is what some people call, history.
