The old Ohio Penitentiary kept this City on lock down for 150 years between 1834 and 1984. In 1930, a fire broke out when 3 inmates tried to create a distraction to escape. The escape, a candle inside a bucket of oil under wooden stairs, didn't exactly go as planned. The stairs were supposed catch fire from the oil while the inmates were at lunch, but the wick of the candle burned slower than anticipated and it didn't end up spreading until the inmates returned to their cells. Locked inside, this made the worst tragedy in Columbus of the time. Torn down in the 90's, it occupied the area now known as the Arena District.
